The humble Clay mask has been widely used, both traditionally as a home remedy as well as being included in many over the counter skin care products. However not many people know that clay can be used as both an internal and external home remedy for acne.
The Clay mask has a very absorbing quality so it helps to draw out excess oil and toxins in the skin. When taken internally it also has the same affect in the gastrointestinal tract, absorbing toxins and preventing them from being taken into the blood stream and circulating to the tissues such as the skin. There is no doubt that it is important to treat your acne from both inside and out, this home remedy might well do both.
There are many different types of clays available on the market and you want to get your hands on the right one. Clays contain trace minerals which are part of their healing benefits, so you want to find a clay that is high in trace elements, generally Calcium bentonite clays. This clay is particularly purifying and detoxifying on the body. You also want to make sure that you get a clay that is safe to ingest if you wish to try it as an internal home remedy for acne.
There are many ways of using clays externally, you can mix them into a mask using herbal infusions, hydrosols, purified water and essential oils. You can also mix a small amount into your cleanser and moisturiser.
Following is one of my favorite recipies using clay as a home remedy for acne.
Aloe clay mask
- One tablespoon of bentonite clay powder
- One to two tablespoons of aloe vera gel
- Five drops of tea tree oil
Mix ingredients in a small bowl you can add a few drops of purified water if you prefer a thinner consistency, then apply a thin film to the skin. Leave it on for 10-20 minutes and then rinse off. You can do this three times a week. The healing properties of aloe and the detoxifing properties of the clay are a really nice combination.
